The fiberglass on my pool filter and pump is being damaged by the sun. When yous run your hand across the fiberglass information technology wipes off like a pulverization. And it does make my pare itchy like fiberglass insulation will.
I don't have much options as far as protecting this equipment from the lord's day (I can't build a roof over the equipment someday shortly). Is at that place such a thing equally a material-similar filter cover (its a Pentair FNS60Plus)?

Last twelvemonth I gave the filter housing a glaze of automotive wax. I'm not certain if that stopped the damage but it did comprise the chalk/pulverisation coming off. I noticed the problem is back (no more signs of the wax remain this yr).

Has anyone else seen this problem?
Is there any blanket (paint like) that might assistance? Fiberglass boats don't accept this problem (that I know of) is that due to a dissimilar type of fiberglass or mayhap they take a top blanket/paint of some sort.

Boats exercise have the problem with enough sun exposure. It is slowed on them considering of the gel glaze.

I'd endeavour painting the filter. Sand it with medium sand newspaper, rinse it off, and then wipe it downwards with paint thinner. Krylon Fusion would be 1 choice for a paint.

Every bit JohnT said, it'due south common and even if left lone the filter will final a very long fourth dimension.

Painting is a skillful idea. You don't even have to sand it if you don't want to. Just wipe it down with thinner and paint it. Sanding it volition just make the surface a piddling smoother.

I highly recommend Rustolem Hammered Metallic paints practical past castor or roller from a can. I take painted the aging filters on both of my pools with this and it works corking. The "hammered" effect hides brush marks and goes on thick. I apply two coats. The silverish is very protective since I take the Arizona sun to deal with.

The paint locks downwards all those itchy glass fibers. I coated the filter housing at my rental firm with this 5 years ago and information technology however looks great. The enamel is not equally decumbent to chipping as some of the plastic "fusion" paints I accept tried. Those are hard and seem to chip on me. I just painted the filter pictured below at my house concluding weekend because I am relocating all the pool equipment to a new pad and information technology was a great time to protect it. The base back up of the filter was painted with the same paint but in a spray tin version considering that is what I had in the cabinet. It'south not in the photo but I also painted the top cap with the same spray as the base of operations considering it was also showing age with glass fibers exposed.

I pigment all my metal pool fencing with this and even a whole car trailer. Information technology is very durable and does not require a primer or special prep work.

Cheers for the great tips.
Does it matter whether I use a spray can or bush-on Rustoleum? Is it the same production only with different application methods?
Would an automotive (spray can) pigment (presumably has UV protection) be a better pick - or does the Rustoleum also accept UV protection?

slickraft - thanks for sharing. Does look dainty. I was thinking of painting mine to look similar a giant minion - as the grandkids would like, but that looks really dainty.

I feel I go a better, thicker appication with a castor or roller but if the surface area is small I'll become with the spray for convenience. Two coats are always best with either blazon application. The spray volition cost more to cover a big area of course.

With the hammered effect I'chiliad not worrying almost a smoothen surface finish but it certain hides a lot of scratches and defects underneath. Rustoleum is made for outdoor apply, particularly this version. I would non remember an automotive spray paint would be any better suited for this apply.

That looks great. I dread working on my filter housing due to the fact that I crawling terribly when I'thou done. Did a quick search, found your answer here and then searched on the paint. Wally world had Gray on quarts on sale for $15. Two plus a castor and I got costless aircraft. Thanks for the heads up. The FL lord's day has been giving it a chirapsia.
